I wouldn't buy any more PPC. Honestly if you need a Mac based server, a dual G4 would be cheaper, cooler, quieter, and just as capable.
Is $500 for a dual-core 2.3GHz G5 a good deal?

If you are editing video it may not work with your camera.
The hard drive and memory card cameras require and Intel processor.

I do think donuts would be in order for that error.

As noted, a good but not great price. The most powerful G5 short of being a liquid-cooled model, so it should be good for a bit longer. If you also have a number of PPC-only applications, it could be a good transitional machine until you can afford to replace the software with Intel versions.

but you can't run OS9!

Sold my Power Mac G5 three years ago to ensure I wouldn't fall victim to the floor suddenly dropping on G5 prices. At this point I would only buy a G5 machine if I absolutely, positively needed Mac OS Classic (i.e. OS 9) functionality.

I sold my dual 2.0 G5 a couple of months ago for $500 and I feel lucky to have gotten that.

$350 would be a good price... IF you have software that will not run on Intel. OTOH, $500 would get you most of the way to a mini.
