We have "affinity" plates which have special markings that show you support a cause or belong to a group or what not, to which they assign a random number. Then there are personalized plates which have text like "BIG GUY" or "QT PIE" in place of the plate number. These can also be affinity plates, but it's the personalized ones with nonsense like "GOKHA" or "BNLVR" that have my cockles up this afternoon. In Washington, a vanity plate is personalized, I'm not talking about "affinity plates", which we have as well. Vanity plates are $50 a year, all proceedes go to fish and game.

Best one I've seen that slipped through the sensors:
3M TA3 I saw it a few times in Berkeley in the early 90s.

In a previous life I was into exotic cars but now like to keep a low profile. The last thing I want is someone recognizing my car because of vanity plates. I have a "stealth" car, a grey Corolla, totally nondescript except for a slightly bent antenna which is my "homing device" to find the car in a parking lot. Each to her own.

In washington state they are only allowed to charge $35 to renew tabs. To create new revenue we are now forced to purchase new license plates every couple of years wether we need them or not. To make the scam even worse they don't reissue the same plate number so you have to memorize a new plate.
I said "to heck with it" and I pay $15/yr to have my ham license on my license plate. I can always remember that and if I'm going to pay anyway I might as well get what I want. KC7HPT
