the shift key is working. for instance, when typing in the rows that do work - numbers and a row - i'm able to get to capitals and other punctuations. thus, from the laptop i was able to try shift mode. by the way, the bracket and backslash key on the q row DO work.
as for booting into firmware, i had to use the external keyboard for that.
one other weird thing - and it was doing this before the keyboard went whack - i can't get the log-in window to show two accounts even though it's set for show list of users. it will only show my account. i just now logged in as my bro by setting the pref to automatically log in as him (i have his password). yet, when i logged him out, the log in window only offers my account as the option to log back in.
maybe i should run Disk Utility? how might i reset the PRAM or PMU?

called my brother. he was as perplexed as i. the computer had not been acting strange though when i retrieved it it was on the floor of a closet in a case. he doesn't use it all that much.
brother suggested taking the battery out and letting it sit for a while. which i did. i just started it up a few minutes ago. go figure. i'm posting from it now.
very bizarre...

Did you install the Logitech driver from a CD or from a recently downloaded disk image or from a recently downloaded zip file?
If you got it from CD, you've almost certainly installed an obsolete driver and that is asking for trouble. There should be an uninstaller on the disc.
If you installed it from a recently downloaded disk image, the uninstaller should be on the disk image.
If the installer was merely zipped, it should have installed an uninstaller in /Library/Application Support/Logitech.
...Also, if you have something called APE in your system preferences, make sure that it is removed when you run the uninstaller. If it's not removed then you should remove it manually.

Doc,
i downloaded the logitech driver from their site. it was a zipped file that Safari immediately unloaded on the desktop as a package. there was no uninstaller. i even opened the package and went through the install process to see if an uninstall option came up; it didn't. and i checked all the menus on the installer.
i'll do a search for APE. to manually uninstall it i found a folder in Application Support (where i had also looked for an uninstaller) and Pref Panes.

Argh! Sorry. The new Logitech installer puts the uninstaller in the /Applications/Utilities folder.
It's called "LCC Uninstaller."
