I was 11. Don't remember the actual announcement but I do remember the big split the following day among kids on my block. Those younger than me were completely unaffected and those older than me were very upset.
I knew who he was, knew some Beatles' songs (my parents were fans) but of course didn't really know the depth of his work until a few years later. DM

I was 9. We were watching WKRP on the little black and white teevee in the kitchen. Connie Chung delivered the news.

I was 20 years old. Some of my friends had no idea just how much Lennon had contributed to popular music, and didn't understand what the big fuss was over him. So sad.

I remember where I was when I learned JFK was shot, and I remember where I was on 9-11. It would have never occurred to me that anyone would remember where they were when they heard John Lennon had been shot.

Working 2nd shift on an assembly line building Buicks in Flint, MI. I didn't have too much time to think about it at the time, because I was busting my butt on a sucky job (hanging gas tanks) and was more concerned about getting through the night without collapsing.
I also remember how Paul McCartney was criticized about the "It's a drag, isn't it?" comment when reporters swarmed asking what his reaction was the next day.

I was working on my art, sipping a glass of wine and listening to KGO radio in my little house in rural Northern California. It was in the evening, about 10 PM as I remember.

Junior High. Had the radio set to wake me up, and I woke up to the Top-40 DJ speaking in solemn tones with the news. Jim King was the DJ, Cleveland, WGCL.
At the time I was too young to really appreciate the event's significance, and utter absurdity in the existentialist sense.

I was at a Stevie Wonder concert at the Oakland Coliseum. He stopped the show and announced the news in tears. Followed by singing Happy Birthday:
You know it doesn't make much sense There ought to be a law against Anyone who takes offense At a day in your celebration Cause we all know in our minds That there ought to be a time That we can set aside To show just how much we love you And I'm sure you would agree It couldn't fit more perfectly Than to have a world party on the day you came to be Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday I just never understood How a man who died for good Could not have a day that would Be set aside for his recognition Because it should never be Just because some cannot see The dream as clear as he That they should make it become an illusion And we all know everything That he stood for time will bring For in peace our hearts will sing Thanks to... |
