You can check for the presence of an Airport Card in the MDD using System Profiler under "About This Mac". If it's there, It'll say so. No need to crack the case.....

...I don't understand why Ethernet won't work just fine?

MDDs did NOT have Airport as a standard component. It was an option or, easily added later. I don't remember if Bluetooth was standard. A quick glance at the header bar will show the BT symbol if its on the MDD in question.

Black was wondering if the G4, connected to the one ethernet port on the modem via its one ethernet port, could then share the internet connection from the G4 to the iMac over a USB cable. That would work over FireWire, or over a second ethernet connection if the G4 had another ethernet card, but doesn't work over USB. However, I'd guess internet sharing over USB could work if someone wrote a driver for it. Given that USB can be used to enable WiFi connections it is technically able to support a network connection. Here's a gadget which does allow sharing an internet connection over USB, but it's Windows only: http://www.mobilemag.com/2009/02/23/shar...rs-needed/ - W

Winston got it.
Anyway, I'm here now, on the new iMac, with the Ethernet connected to the new mac from the modem. The modem has exactly -one- ethernet port. I brought a 500 GB external USB hard drive and am putting everything from the G4 onto it. Will then have to come back and transfer from the 500 to the iMac (for whatever files are still needed). Migration assistant only took the content from the startup volume. Did an OK job of taking here users over, though. Major major carnage in terms of dock question marks. Will need to spend hours and hours teaching her how to use new apps. MDDs don't even have native USB2-- thank god there's an upgrade card in there. There is no Airport card and no Bluetooth. We're talking about a mac from 2003 here, folks.

Hah! Modern! (says the guy using a TiBook and a G4 Cube).
FireWire and Target Disk Mode would have been nice for transferring the files. Glad you're finding a solution. - W

This is why I keep an extra router around. Just for times like this.

Well, another friend stopped by and I ended up staying until everything transferred from the G4 to the external. Left her up and running on the new mac, able to scan and print, but there's still major work to be done.
I do need to get a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter. Wonder if Monoprice is back up . . .

MonoPrice has been up for a little while now. I wasn't one of the people bit by the credit card thieves so I was a little less gun shy about ordering from MonoPrice.
