I think sekker is saying that Apple has made a bad design decision. By another, perhaps the ridiculous Mac mini case design (when it comes to accessibility), the firmware update that broke third party video cable support on iPod touches, the lack of Bluetooth mic support on the iPod touch (never mind the fact that it supports stereo Bluetooth headsets and mics, just not stereo headsets with Mics), or the myriad different video connectors Apple has foisted upon their users in the last, I don't know, say 10 years.

I love most of my Apple products, but the company has made some curious design decisions to say the least.

What models were these? I've done HD replacements since the 1st Gen PPC days without any problems. Is this from the 680x0 days?

I put a modern Seagate 120GB PATA drive in an LC 580 running Mac OS 8.1. No problems. Sure, I had to partition into an HFS boot and HFS+ data to best use the ample storage of the drive, but smooth sailing. I think older versions of the OS were more finicky when it came to third party drives and the Apple format software. I think there was even an issue with making third party optical drives bootable.

Again, I believe the newer versions of the classic Mac OS smoothed out these issues.
