content consuming device, not content creating device.
I think that will change noticeably in the not too distant future.
And I think PrintCentral from Lyle's link is just the thing to facilitate that change.

if Mother Apple wanted us to print from the 'pad, she would have put in some capability from the outset, no? it is 2010, after all.

I agree, I've been trying for years now to print from my iPod Touch to very little avail (mostly coupons that I find on the net when near a store). Considering the zillions of apps out there, and there are some photo printing ones I don't think Apple wants us to. Probably protecting their laptop line.

Stevie didn't want to be bothered with loading the OS with printer drivers.
And he wants you to sync with mobileme.

Perhaps you could send the document you would like to print from the iPad to a watch-folder on a local machine that was setup to send anything that arrived to the printer?

I think that's a big part of it.
Also, it's a big enough pain to print in different locations from my MacBooks.
Different network setups and all that.
Like Copy and Paste and multitasking, Apple is not putting out this feature until the user experience is completely Apple-like -- for better or for worse.
Also, remember that anything like this has to be recompiled for a non-industry-standard processor. Open-source drivers are readily available for lots of printers out there, but somebody still has to compile them for the ARM, test them, maintain them, etc. It's not just flipping a switch to make printing "available" on the iPhone/iPad/iPod.
