It has also been used by a self-described "vampire" in Pinellas County, a Miami man arrested with a single marijuana cigarette, a Fort Myers homeowner who shot a bear and a West Palm Beach jogger who beat a Jack Russell terrier.

i want to read those stories. Good heavens.

Read some Carl Hiaasen novels. I have! :-)

"Stand your ground" means that you are allowed to use force, even deadly force, because you feel threatened -- without having to prove afterward that you attempted to flee and could not, which some states require you do to qualify for self defense. In short, all you need is to feel threatened and you are legally free to shoot first and ask questions later. It's obviously a crazy law that was very badly written, and intended to encourage people to consider guns their first line of defense as opposed to their last. It virtually cries out for everyone to arm themselves in order to be able to stand their ground against anyone who might stand their ground. It's an NRA wet dream.

Sorry if that bothers you. Have a nice day.

At least make sure it's not the police, emergency responder, family, neighbors, or friends.

Why?

Shoot first. Ask questions later.

I was adding context, swampy. You said it once before; you should be proud to have it repeated.

hmm...

According to a new analysis of Stand Your Ground by the Tampa Bay Times, not only is the law racially biased; it also allows people to get way with outright violent attacks that sometimes resemble murder. For instance, one of the more chilling revelations from the Times’ reporting is that the Stand Your Ground defense has worked in Florida even in cases when the victim has been shot in the back.

Besides allowing questionable behavior, Stand Your Ground also appears to mete out justice in a way that’s not blind toward race. Under Stand Your Ground, people who killed African-Americans went free in 73 percent of the cases, while people who killed whites went free just 59 percent of the time.

In other words, when Stand Your Ground isn’t allowing neighborhood watch members to shoot young Black men, it’s allowing young Black men to kill each other. A grosser law we can’t think of right now.

The opinions expressed here do not necessarily reflect those of BET Networks.
