Does it do it on a clean install to the internal drive? Nothing added?

I am not using the internal drive for booting.
It happens randomly every few days and I can't reproduce it by doing the exact same thing again, so I'm not going to be trying some clean install somewhere for days on end while not being able to get my work done.

There are bugs with USB connected devices in general... if you're using a USB external - moving to FireWire could solve...

I have had very good luck with Maverick but I feel your pain. It can be frustrating when the OS is not as robust as it should be. One example would be how the finder freezes if an external volume stops responding. Why should the OS stop for that? Good luck troubleshooting your current problem.

I still haven't upgraded my two 10.8.5 Macs to Mavericks. Do I want to?

Maybe I'll try it on my MBP first. . . Precautions? How would I revert back?

Typically happens when browsing a news site or in the case a few minutes ago a Facebook page in hebrew linked in another thread. I go to scroll and 'blam'-- frozen.

Which web browser are you using?

Does it occur when you use an alternative browser?

I pretty much only use Fiefox, and it's a very intermittent problem, so, no idea. Reports from others with the same problem suggest it's all browsers.

Black,
Just about a week ago I posted this same observation and almost 100% of the responses were the opposite. I get random freezing and restart crashes especially when I'm running adobe apps but it's always different. It happens 4-5 times a week. I never had these problems with 10.8. I'm running a few year old MP with 20 gigs of memory.
