Years ago I did a lot of the work myself. Now I follow the Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) rule of thumb.

the good news was that dad could get on the roof to clean the gutters at 77.
the bad news was that he couldn't stay there. r.i.p., dad (he died five years later of unrelated causes.)

I'm am forbidden from our 2nd floor roof, without adequate ladder help and only to clean gutters from the ladder, not the roof itself.
I must say, I'm no longer interested in the extension ladder and I don't care what it thinks of me. Washing the car is my favorite height.

Balance becomes an issue as one ages. That more than anything else can create problems even if one has both feet planted firmly on the ground!
Hope your injury doesn't get any worse. Landing on head, neck, upper body is not recommended!!

Spent a lot of time on roofs when I worked for a painter as well as replacing more roofs than I care to remember. Boots tend to have much less flex than sneakers and grip the roof better.

One either spends time or money. You may save money, but the time injured is more costly.
