Used Car Prices

1971 Mercury Capri bought in 1976 for $1750. I had one problem with the car; I don't remember exactly what it was but a gas station mechanic out in the middle of nowhere drove 30 miles to get a part and fixed it that day. I was pretty happy to pay that bill.

When I got my college job in 1981 I bought a different used car and gave the Capri to a church to give to somebody who needed it. A couple of years later I saw it on our campus parked in the student area near a technical program classroom building. It was there regularly for a couple of years and then it disappeared. I hope the student graduated and took the car to her/his new job!

First new car I ever bought was a Capri. Had a 6 cylinder engine and really flew. Got a lot of tickets in it. Got nailed by an airplane once driving from LA to Seattle. Not fair, in my opinion.

Inherited the family 4 door 1965 impala 3 speed auto with a 283 v8. I was in to motorcycles and wanted a 4 speed so my dad traded it on a used 1970 Vega with 4 speed 4 banger for under 2k. I put stripes on the hood, added a Craig 8 track and mags on the back wheels and put on a Thrush muffler. Thought I was hot stuff. Did beat my friends Pinto at the 1/8 mile drag strip. Fun goofy times

In 1975 I bought a 1969 Camaro for $650. Lots of performance upgrades, and a paint job later, sol in 1978 for $2250. Lost money, but had fun.

My next few cars:
1972 Datsun 240Z
1973 Porsche 911
1977 VW Scirocco
1975 BMW 2002

Lots of performance work on all, lots of money spent, lots of fun… Would like to have all of them today, especially the 911.

A Vega you got for free was a money loser.

1968 AMC (Rambler) Rebel purchased for $300 in 1975. Straight six cylinder engine. The only option that car had was the automatic transmission, but it did have a newfangled locking rear differential. A handy feature to have in the snowy Midwest.
