Please help me sell my car!

[quote Baby Tats][quote BigGuynRusty]most likely well worn pedals really point to a badly maintained car. Complete BS.
WOW!!
You snipped down my post and turned it around.
IF you had really read my post it was almost identical to yours, in essence no matter how mechanically sound the car is, MOST people equate dings/dents/dull paint/worn pedals/worn floor mats/dirty carpet & seats with poor maintenance routines, most folks have never been mechanics and don't have a clue what to look for.
But pull out the dents, 100 buck paint job, shampoo the interior, new floor mats and pedals and you can sell a car that is on it's last mile for premium bucks.

My post was much less racist also!

Thanks again everyone!

Unfortunately, pulling out all the dings will be impossible. I live in a major city and park in a high rise garage. There are tons of door dings and other little nicks and dents all around the car. None of them are deep enough to be popped out- each panel would need to be replaced.

I have spoken with 6 different dealers and they have all given me the same trade in figures I mentioned above. Actually, two of the salespeople suggested I sell the car on my own to improve my return.

I definitely plan to get the car detailed before I show it to anyone but the car IS 10 years old, and it has been driven extensively in snow, sleet, street salt, sun and rain over those past 10 years. No matter what, it 'ain't going to look new. Smile

As for the price, I would be very happy with $4,000 so I thought if I priced it at $4500 that would leave some wiggle room.

Again, thanks for all your imput- it has been helpful!!!

Sorry, I didn't mean to twist; it just seemed like you were saying that worn pedals were the most likely indicator of bad maintenance. We are in total agreement about how important the visual appeal is to selling a car.

There was absolutely nothing racist about what I wrote. Around here, it is a fact that the black owned and run detailing businesses do the best job and at the best price. Are there exceptions? Sure. But I know where to go to find people who take pride in their business and pride in the work they do. And it isn't the corporate owned chain car wash in the McSuburbs. What I said is no different than saying that the best Chinese food can be found in China town. And when I want my head shaved right- with out cuts and stray hairs left around my ears- I would much rather go to a black barber shop than to Super Cuts. Admittedly, it can be a little intimidating at first- but it gives me an appreciation of what it feels like to be the "other". I like my city and my neighborhood and I prefer to patronize local businesses. It is what it is, and my comment was made without judgment or malice.

You might want to examine your own perceptions on this matter before you comment on others.

Nope, one bit of advice, when you point out the ethnicity of someone/group, and say "they do the..." that is being racist. Folks are individuals, not things to be grouped.
Also, the whole "Intimidated" remark is also a major indicator, you are seeing race/color, not people. Why were you "Intimidated"?

They only time I was even close to being intimidated was when someone tried to separate me and my money with a baseball bat. I called his bluff, I kept my money, he ran off without his bat,

I was saying YOU were being racist, as an individual, not you as a certain group/race/color.

One way to slant the craigslist ad is to stress reliability, and its excellent maintenance, with all the records available. The 2 Ford Tempos I sold both went to the first people who saw them. I advertised them as excellent candidates for kids away at college car, or a car to commute in. One sold to a woman who got it for her daughter who was going away to college in 2 months, and the other one went to a guy who was tired of paying fuel bills for his F-250 truck that he was commuting in, not to mention trying to park.

Both were thrilled to get clean, well maintained cars at a reasonable price. Also stress the below average mileage. Roughly 15-18K is average for a year these days. Yours is below average. You aren't even at 12K a year.

Good pics are a must.

Yep, great info Racer X. Thanks! I didn't think about hyping the gas mileage aspect. This car gets great mileage and it only cost me $31 to fill the tank this morning!

You are trtying to attract and appeal to someone who wants a decent reliable car at a fair price. To many, cosmetics aren't a significant part of that equation. And if you have good pics, and they still show up, they are at least interested enough to get up from their keyboard and look for themselves.

I'll be happy to post some pix but I won't be able to post them today- heading out of town for work. I'll get some taken and put them up this weekend. Smile
