Steve Jobs never took a vow of poverty.

I think you mean 2CV, though that is a Citroen, NOT a Renault.

Steve Jobs never took a vow of poverty. HEAR HEAR. Steve Jobs has done more to help mankind than ANYONE repeat ANYONE here has EVER done, or EVER WILL DO. Most of us spend our money on bad entertainment and cheap plastic crap. The only difference between the folks here and the rest of humanity is that we ALSO invest in some superior bits of electronica. I would quote the "people living in glass houses" thing, but in this case it's more like "monkeys with rubber feces shouldn't toss them at shiny objects."

OTOH, Gates is turning out to be quite the hero in a way that no one here ever imagined he might be, I am guessing.

In what way is he a hero? The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest transparently operated charitable foundation in the world, founded by Bill and Melinda Gates in 2000 and doubled in size by Warren Buffett in 2006. The primary aims of the foundation are, globally, to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty, and, in the United States, to expand educational opportunities and access to information technology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_and_Me...Foundation On the one hand, I think that Jobs has the absolute right to spend his money any way he sees fit. And let's face it, if you are Steve Jobs it is going to be difficult to take a vacation the way the rest of us might, because you are going to be approached constantly for autographs or photos or people trying to sell you their great new idea. So it is probably a lot nicer to hang out on a yacht and have some privacy. On the other hand, it is obvious that Bill Gates is using his wealth for some very good causes -- although I have always suspected his wife is the impetus for this, somehow I think he was more or less oblivious to the world around him before he married her, but maybe I am being unfair to him. And no, he doesn't just donate Windows machines and software to people! Meanwhile Jobs, at least publicly, contributes zero towards any social causes or health organizations -- or to anyone at all as far as the public can tell, except for political candidates that he favors. Still, I think it's just fine if Steve Jobs wants a fancy yacht. Assuming that very badly written article has any veracity at all.

BTW, just because no one knows what Jobs' eleemosynary activities are doesn't mean he isn't philanthropic...

Now consider that MS/Gates:
- chronically defied consent decrees - knowingly gave false evidence at the anti-trust trial - has been determined by both the District and Appeals federal courts to have engaged in abusive monopoly - has behaved in a way that united more than 20 state attorneys general to bring an end to this abusive behavior - now defies the will of the EU in perpetuating the abuse of its monopoly Hero? Not hardly--more like big-time money launderer... |
