In situations like this, I will usually just flip the mirror up, pretend I don't see him and drive normally (safely).
dealing with tailgaters... is this legal?

That is no guarantee to no road rage.

If you turn on your headlights, it makes your tail lights come on and sometimes that will fake them into thinking it is your brake lights. I have used this trick before.

Five years ago in a 50 mph zone I had cars in front of me and to the right of me so I couldn't pull over into the right lane..... a woman came up on us like crazy and then just hung on my bumper. I tapped my brake lights not enough to slow down but to signal. As we slowed toward an upcoming red light, traffic cleared sufficiently that I could pull to the right lane. She pulled up beside me and as the light turned green, she pointed a hand gun straight at me and took off through the intersection. I got her tag number and reported it minutes later at the office. Sheriff's deputy came to the office and talked with me..... never heard further.
Several weeks later a friend from the officie said on the same stretch, an officer had the same model and color car pulled over. The distinguishing feature was her Florida State tag.... and several others had observed her reckless driving over the weeks. Apparently she worked somewhere in the same area. I'm very mindful of the potential for road rage now.

old trick for daylight driving, turn on your lights for 2-3 seconds. The flash of the tail lights might get their attention.
DOH, rgG beat me to it ![]() Otherwise, look into getting a trunk mounted minigun & rocket launcher.... ![]()

I'm thankful for my automatically dimming mirrors. They can shine their brights all they want, my mirrors will compensate.
I dug hard and long to try and find every little rule that would allow me to legally speed. On a multi-lane highway in this state, there is none. So if someone is doing 60 in a 60, I can't fault them. I usually sit in the middle lanes with cruise control on. If someone comes up behind me, they can go around, that's what the left lane is for. I pretty much ignore them no matter how close they get. My days of excessive speeding are over. When I drive I typically have my wife in the car, and we have good conversations. So it's nice to be able to focus on that and driving, and not adding watching for cops out of every nook and cranny.

wash your windshield...the water sprays back and they have to turn their wipers on and wash theirs...works most every time...but could definitely get them more pissed..
best to just let them go around... kiva

One alternative- my favourite event in this case. I
was driving towards the airport in Pittsburgh in heavy traffic. A fellow in an "I'm a Captain of Industry" car and suit blew up to within inches of my rear bumper. He laid on his horn, and began gesticulating angrily at me. I could not turn out of the lane, so I did the next best thing. I slowed down to the legal speed limit. We drove that way for a mile or so, him honking and making obscene gestures, me listening to classical music on the radio and driving right at 55. Then traffic eased up, I pulled back into the slow lane, and he blew past me foaming at the mouth and screaming at me. Downhill. The LONG hill just before the airport. Where there was an almost permanent police speed trap. As I approached the middle of the next hill, I passed our hero, pulled over in front of a police cruiser, head in his hands. As I passed, I smiled, blew him a kiss, and waved saucily. That happened almost 20 years ago, and I will always treasure that moment. |
