SMS fee avoidance on iPhone
#21
at&t mobile to mobile texting absolutely is not free, and like cell phone calls, sending *and* receiving counts against you.

The OG 'Phones got/get 200 free text messages with the data plan. It doesn't make any difference who they're from or to.

The new 3G plan gets *no* free messages, and the first 200 cost an[ ] extra $5.

[It's the at&t mobile to mobile calls that are free.]

You do realize that 1,500 texts a month equates to approximately 50 per day, right?
Unless your daughter is a doctor, Gossip Girl, or Stephen Hawking, why on earth would anyone need to text (and yes, I'm including sending and receiving) 50 times a day?

Do you have a teenage daughter?

I don't, and even I know it's not about *need*. Sending 25 texts and getting even only (as if!) one response in a day is *nothing* for the average text savvy teen.

Like I said, it's not always about need.

I signed up for the 200 for $5 and at the time my good friend said something along the lines "You know, 200 texts is nothing". He told me his early teenage son probably comes close to 2000 a month (I think that was the number). I laughed and told him I'd use the email instead (or as a supplement) if I found 200 wasn't enough. He told me not everyone has email on their phone and I told him at the rates for unlimited texting, that's their problem ;-)

The text thing is a scam and ripoff. I refuse to be gouged and am in part being cheap but also telling AT&T to piss off by not buying into it. I get the whole "kids want to text" thing but again, it's certainly not a luxury I'd provide at those rates. I'm also getting old!

It's ironic that in the Land of The Free and The Home of The Brave that text messaging would cost so much.

I remember about ten years ago, while I was in living in SE Asia, texting was cheap. In fact, it was so popular because it was cheaper than talking. You could communicate more through text than voice because voice cost considerably more.

But you're right. It's gouging pure and simple.

A couple of years ago when we started up with T-Mobile, my wife convinced me to add the unlimited texting for families for the extra $19.95./mo. I never understood why people would choose to text when they can just make a call, but what did I know. Now that we have it, I can see that it sometimes can be much more convenient. And thank God we got the unlimited family plan. In analyzing our monthly bills, our son (now 19) has been known to rack up 2k texts in a month without too much effort. But he does it so damn fast, it is faster than making that call and actually talking. He has a lot of friends and this is their first year off at college, so that may account for some of the volume. And he's still pulling a high 3 GPA. so it's hard to beef about it.

Last month (just him):

Txt Msg Recd Messages 2,749
Txt Msg Sent Messages 2,696

My daughter:

Txt Msg Recd Messages 566
Txt Msg Sent Messages 588

I guess that's the difference a girlfriend/boyfiend makes (or doesn't make).
