"Why is This GOP House Candidate Dressed as a Nazi?"
#31
Iott belonged to a group which called itself Wiking.

It's just plain stupid as I said before. He deserves to lose the race over it.

He's got an apparent hobby of being a re-enactor.

That's all explained in the article. That is not in doubt.

What is out of context?

Yes, I read the article.

"Iott said he hoped it would not: "They have to take it in context. There's reenactors out there who do everything. You couldn't do Civil War re-enacting if somebody didn't play the role of the Confederates.
is something that's definitely way in the past. ... [I hope voters] take it in context and see it for what it is, an interest in World War II history. And that's strictly all." "

It's one thing to dress up and play wargames. It's entirely another to assume that, again, what you wear means what you think.

Obama Turban = Obama Muslim. right ?

If your position is that he just happened to be playing a German and that is the end of it, then you need to go back and read the article again.

No one is accusing him of being or wanting to be a Nazi. But his choice to dress up as one is a little deeper than "That's just the uniform they gave me."

Since turbans are worn by people in all sorts of different religions I think you'll have to find another comparison.

There ARE WWII reenactors who stage battles the same way Civil War reenactors do. And yes, there are some who dress up in German uniforms.

Here's the problem with making this just about "reenacting." Some people in the south who do that as a hobby have overly romanticized and historically incorrect views of the role of the Confederacy, and ignore what was seriously wrong with the South at that time: slavery. That type of behavior benefits no one and is hurtful to society. I grew up in South Carolina and I'm well aware of how some fans of the Confederacy, yes including some reenactors, think.
Yes some reenactment is all in good fun and actually does respect history, but not always.

This guy is a member of a group called "Wiking" that says on its website that it "admires Nazi accomplishments." And Iott is on record saying this himself. I think most of us wouldn't be caught dead saying that. This group romanticizes this Waffen SS group and makes historically inaccurate statements about them in order to put them in a better light. I personally think that's a very bad idea. I would venture that at the time this guy was playing SS on the weekends he wasn't planning to run for Congress someday.
And how can any American look someone who is Jewish in the eye and say "I admire Nazi accomplishments."

That's wrong on every level. Sorry, but there's no excuse for Mr. Lott. His participation in the group shows very poor judgment.
If he is truly a fan of history and wanted to teach his son about WWII and the SS, his time would have been better spent at the Holocaust Museum.

How much rage did you show when Bill Clinton said that Robert Byrd just had to be a KKK to get elected in West Virginia?

The excuse people use is that the Waffen-SS was the military branch of the SS and so they try to portray them as regular old army guys with an unfortunate connection to the "real" SS. However, that's not what the Nuremberg Trials determined. As for accomplishments, Wiking committed actual war crimes in the Ukraine. What a poor, poor choice for one's weekend entertainment.
