Let's see how he feels when the IRS tells him that he needs to pay income tax on all of those "gifts" that he just got. I'm sure that they Yankees are writing them off as business expenses.

I'm assuming that he didn't grow up in NYC.

If he sold the ball for $250,000 he'd have big taxes there too.

Welcome to Dave's BBQ!

I honestly don't know what I would do. Jeter seems like a decent guy. I imagine with 90% of other players, I would sell it for sure.

If Jeter wants the ball sell it to him for 10% off FMV. A cell phone salesman just gave a quarter of a million dollars to a multi multi millionaire? Dumb.

And a lot of CASH left over after paying said taxes.

Cash is king.

Wow. A good moral, ethical move beats out greed and the guy gets blasted because of a dislike of the Yankees. There's something to teach the kids.

Morality and ethics have nothing to do with this situation.

No kidding. Everyone seems to focus on the 40% -50% taxes and ignore the rest is basically found money. Of course, the seller could stipulate than Jeter pays the taxes as well. Smile

I'm a lifelong Yankees fan and #2 is Little Poochie's favorite Yankee.

As much as I respect Jeter, I'd hold out for the highest bidder. Sorry, but digging out of debt, securing Little Poochie's college fund and saving a few scraps for my retirement is more important to me than some silly baseball.

Exactly. You have to put family first.

Update:

Fan has several thousands of dollars worth of student debt. Obviously didn't take any economics courses.

Someone explain to me how MLB has managed to shift thinking that the player who hit the ball "owns" it or that he has a rightful claim to it somehow.

Yup, he never even touched it before, someone threw it at him and he defended himself deflecting it with a bat.

Maybe give it to the pitcher.
