How / when did you discover Dealmac?
#31
For me it was shopping for an original iMac, which I didn't buy, so summer of 98 or so. The rule at that time, maybe the only rule on the forum other than the standards of behavior enforced by the community, was that you were supposed to use your real name. I can see several of us left on this forum in this thread still following that now, after all these years.

I can't say for sure, as it was a long time ago. Mid nineties?

I do remember chiming in on a thread about a Mac virus, and I mentioned one was on a Mac Addict disc that came with the magazine.

I'm sure I lurked there for quite awhile before posting.

I'm thinking I may have heard of it from the MacSurfer site. I did spend a lot of time there way back when, but my memory fails me.

I've mentioned before how some kind folks on the old DealMac forum got rid of my "Welcome Datacomp" virus. THe virus was in the third-party keyboard I was using on my PowerTower Pro. (maybe '96 or '97)

Does anybody else remember the online company that was offering too-good-to-be-true deals for a variety of items. It was something like "America Value" (but not that). You could also order with an 800 number. Turns out the company delivered on its great deals, even though it was an unsustainable business model, and went out of business.

I think it was 98 or 99 while I was looking for info on purchasing a Smart & Friendly CD burner. Don't recall exactly how I came across oh though.

Jeez, it was so long ago I couldn’t pin a year to it or remember how I found it. I was active on the forum before you had to have an account, I know that much.

Since Dealmac is coming to an end, I thought it might be fun to review how we all got together.

I was shopping for a new computer in 1997 and spent a lot of time on a forum for Power Computing users that was started by the same guy that founded dpreview (which took off right as PCC lost their Apple license and the forum died a little while later)

On that forum, someone mentioned the existence of dealmac and it soon became a daily reader that lasted for YEARS - longer than any other site I can think of...

anyway, how did you discover dealmac (and later the dealmac forum and then this one)?

That story sounds very familiar as I was following the same websites (the Power Computing forum). The Digital camera review site he started at that time was DCResource.com, I remember it very well. I bought my much used and loved Kodak DC4800 based on his very good review of it. I think his name was/is Jeff Keller.
Ah... you're right - I couldn't remember the right camera page, but I do remember that his name was Jeff Keller - he started while still at UCSD (my school) - we chatted a few times...
Hey cool, I only "knew" him though his various online endeavors. And I just remembered the Power Computing site: Powerwatch.com. I eventually ended up owning one of each PowerComputing machine from the PCI years:

PowerBase 180
PowerCenter 150 (my first)
PowerCenterPro 210
PowerTower 180
PowerTower Pro 250

That was the QT AutoStart kerfuffle.

Too long ago to remember any details about how I found DealMac and its forum. But it was at least a year or two before logins were required to post. They showed the IP as well as the name that a post came from.

Originally I just posted as "Joe", only added the "H" after logins were required and that name was already taken. I did go through the oldest posts on the archived section when that was still up to see if I could figure out my earliest post, but too many "Joe"s posting at around the same time

Some more information on (correct name of company) Value America. As the saying goes, "Pioneers get slaughtered, while settlers prosper."
