I wonder if it's my sister-in-law's mother-in-law's house. She's got a lakeside cabin in the UP that I think she's trying to sell.
If someone gave me a mansion in that area, with the stipulation that I had to live there and not sell it, I wouldn't take it, even for free.

Hey, thanks for all the great comments! They are appreciated! (tu)
First off, I'm passing on this place after several red flags popped up. Not good for just a cursory glance.
Negatives -
1. Looks like a subdivision with a HOA. No dice. I don't want neighborhood nazis harshing my vibe. Also need more yard space, preferably not seeing any neighbors at all.
2. Too close to ski area, with too many weekenders nearby raising a ruckus. I have that now in my little burg!
3. House IS a bit larger than I want, although heating it wouldn't be too bad as I plan on traveling South during the Winters. Three seasons in MI, with the Winter in a warmer clime.
4. Close to railroad. I want QUIET, dammit! And get off my lawn!
5. Also wondered why a Realtor hasn't jumped on it if it was such a good deal. Those people ALWAYS have an advantage on real estate new to the market. Makes it tough for us lowly commoners.
Positives -
1. Low price. Heck, if it were on a better piece of property, I could throw another 100K into it, make it A-1 and still come out better than houses priced much higher in the U.P.
2. It's the U.P. of MI! Not much bad up this way. Virtually no crime, and very few people.
3. Low taxes. I would probably pay less taxes there than I'm currently paying on my existing house.
4. No way you would come CLOSE to building a house of this magnitude for the asking price. Even if it did have a few defects to correct.
5. Lots of windows. I've always liked houses with a lot of glass.
So, on with the search! BTW, I HAVE been drawn to a particularly nice home up in the Houghton/Hancock area, but it was taken off the market recently. I think the owners may have done that just for Winter. If it comes back on the market, that may be the one I jump on out of the 2 dozen I've saved on Zillow over the past few years.

Looks like a cool place. Zillow is usually 'in the ball park' unless there is a real discrepancy or issue to discover.
Might need a little updating or maybe not if that isn't your thing.
Location, Location, Location. It is not the most accessible place. Can't compare this to Colorado or even areas like Petoskey. No big airports, etc. But if the U.P. is your thing, there is some beautiful country up there.
For me, it would need to more drivable from Chicago and would need to be convenient to winterize unless you are thinking of it as a permanent residence. I I lived there year round I would get like Jack in the Shining:
All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. "Face Powder is located 2 blocks from the main ski lodge. A free shuttle is offered during the ski season."
Yeah, that's gonna be loud and busy during ski season.

Contact the realtor anyway. nothing to lose. You could also drop a letter or chase down a direct phone to the house and bypass the realtor.
