I'd suggest you and your fiancee read it together and then pick out a nice synthetic diamond if a gem is still important to you.

I also think buying into the ridiculous DeBeers marketing scumbag's guidelines is the complete opposite of what a meaningful memento of an engagement should be. A few years down the road that expensive but worthless (try selling a diamond for anywhere close to retail) rock will not have any importance at all.
