So...BGnR?

He was ValleyDog. I got the same PM hatemail from "both" of those idiots.

I will never understand the nostalgia for trolls.

Bring him back. He's one of the good guys.

He pissed me off on many occasions and was a bit more than "rude" on a few other occasions. I don't know what prompted it.

He also answered some of my questions with concise and direct answers, sans condescension.

I encounter people like Rusty on a daily or weekly basis; I believe that everyone knows people like him or has met those who exhibit those tendencies. I have no expectations that a place like this should be somehow immune from the genetic pond that we all swim in on a daily basis.

I got one of the Valley Dog PMs, responded, and didn't get any more.

I got a few from BGnR, all helpful, though one about a misspelling irritated me a bit.

I've often wondered if he would come off as abrasive as *I've* often found him to be, in person as opposed to his online persona.

...but attacking someone who's not around to defend himself...

So you chose to characterize someone's recounting of behavior as an attack? I think "bit of spunk" is disingenuous. And even BGnR had pointed out more than once that this is *not* a "tech" forum. There are plenty out there, but most of the people here don't want that. Note the exodus of dealmac people when that format changed.

He has a lot of background and/or knowledge about a variety of subjects, but I often did not care for the way he chose to impart it. I also wondered why he chose to frequent this place.

this is a place where you should be able to ask a question, no matter how stupid, and NOT be told it was stupid. Sometimes, people tend to jump on those who don't do things "right" (provide the OS, version number of app, amount of RAM). I'm all for good-natured ribbing occasionally, but a little civility goes a long way.

Exactly.

While I'm not exactly a "turn the other cheek" type, I think one should at least let the other guy draw first. Of course, if everybody did that, instead of jumping at the chance to pee on somebody's parade...

When this forum is nothing more than a bucolic place where you can post pet obituaries and not get a shred of useful mac or tech advice, you'll all be blissfully happy....

That's a bit dramatic and overstated, don't you think? Granted some think this is a place to "blog" their every waking movement, thought, or irritation, but there is still some good tech info to be had, even if it some days needs to be gleaned rather than find it on a mylar platter.

My complaints about most actual tech forums are 1) the software/format used to present the forum and 2) the fact that most tech forums seem to be populated by a far greater number of bitchy little nerd-wannabes who are quick to engage in judgmental, condescending, and insulting behavior, striving for some kind of alpha dog behavior (no offense, AD) generally sending almost every thread into a denigrating diatribe tailspin.

I tend to prefer forum moderation done Draconian Style, though I might suffer a tad. That said, one of the forums I visit felt that since a few random troll-types wandered in, the answer was to shut the entire forum down for months. In reality, that was just being really lazy.

So shake hands and back to your respective corners until you hear the bell.

He was very kind to me in PM and helped me out by going way over and above offline a couple times. On the forum, I steered clear. He angered me into a sabbatical at one point. But like Cube said, a large grain of salt.

Still not nearly big enough:

Rusty was an abusive ass. I'm pretty sure most here would steer clear of such a personality in RL - why some believe such behavior becomes defensible in the forum environment, I simply can't grasp.

BM?
Someone sent you a bowel movement?

Color me confused (unless you meant PM... in which case, never mind...).
