Are you people sure you're not just making up this "rule" about women's names based on a couple of examples that may or may not have any true significance? Personally I've known of some very conservative women who have married and chosen to retain their pre-marriage name for professional (or perhaps other) reasons. I've known of some very liberal women who have taken the name of their new spouse. I've also managed to live for over sixty years without any occasion to think there is anything the least bit sinister about why a woman may or may not choose to go through the process of changing their name. Some people can be very "traditional" without being "conservative" (whatever that means, since the definition seems to be a moving target, based on the point one is trying to make.)

I agree with your all points, AlphaDog. But I think there is a contingent of people, labeled "conservative" but in fact reactionary and regressive, who do object to powerful women as pointed out by Wags. They subject the rest of us to nonsense like discussing the size of these women's thighs, or the "hidden agenda" of the media calling these women by their legal name, and other such malarkey. When someone complains that Kennedy should not be referred to as Kennedy, that is pure right-wing BS, which I have simply become sick of beyond belief. When someone refuses to comprehend stark naked proof that they are wrong, that is just ignorance.

$tevie... there ya go playing the "I am absolutly right" again. I tend to be conservative, but I don't care what name Ms. Kennedy goes by. It's up to her. And, I might add, that I don't think anyone on this forum has your out of wack views.

On this one, you're way off base, $tevie. Most of us agree she can use any name she wants to.

Yes, but some women go through rotations depending on which way the wind blows. We have had Hillary Clinton, Hillary Rodham and Hillary Rodham Clinton but her marital status never changed during this time. If you can't decide what your name is what do you expect form others?
