Not only that, but if it does I'd likely stop spending anywhere near as much time on here as I do. That goes the same if if disappears completely as well (hey, maybe that's the plan!). I don't post nearly as much as most do on either side, but even if I don't join a conversation I do like reading the various topics.

This whole thing seems to be "out of nowhere" as others have hinted at. As much as I appreciate that this place was set up as a refuge at the beginning (if I recall correctly), I just can't see hanging around if formats are changed or completely vanish. It'd be disappointing as I spend far too much time on here daily (and actually enjoy it, even if not always actively participating).

Addressing the question... I'd prefer it stay as is as it seems the changes would potentially make the place drastically different.

I agree that the political side of this forum is downright touchy feely kumbayah compared to most of the political arguments out on the interwebs. I think the real problem is people who can't realize that Sticks and Stones May Break Their Bones, But Names Will Never Hurt Them. So we have a minority of cry babies who ruin something by calling attention to it, when it could have simply been ignored by everyone who didn't like it, no harm no foul. And those of us who like it could just deal with being insulted by certain strangers whom we don't even really care about, let's face it. Whatever. The handwriting is on the wall.

I personally do not like the flavor of the non-Tips and Deals side. I visit maybe once a year for a few minutes, then move on.

One of the reasons there are fewer Mac Tips and Deals is that Apple is not really making a lot of new products. The DM site was really invaluable when we had all these various Mac clones and vendors. If you want the current spirit that drew me to that space, you need to go to a hackintosh board and not here.

What keeps me here is that I often see newsworthy articles and commentary posted BEFORE news aggregation sites like google, etc.

And for the limitless wisdom on countless topics from forumites - from Larry about SSDs, to food safety.

The conundrum with the 'other side' isn't too surprising. I can certainly see how eliminating it could easily lead to 'polluting' other areas, I also understand you can't just waste resources letting the tail wag the dog.

It's a tough nut. I've only run across one forum that successfully combined allowing OT posting with a zero tolerance for snarking.

Isolating the heated stuff is the choice I prefer, with whatever needs to be done to make it pull it's weight; ad words, banner ads, whatever. Do what'cha gotta do. Beyond that, I'm on the side of not segmenting the forum any further.

The topic, the timing; this thread is making me so giddy I can hardly breathe. Big Grin

Didn't Dm have a checkbox for OT posts making it much easier to remember to mark posts OT. AND wasn't there also an option to block all OT posts?

that would certainly help a single forum be more inviting to those that do not want to look at bickering posts.

I think bill was referring to Dennis R thinking that he was Dennis S.

Actually - DM forum devolved from a deals and tech discussion space into one with personally charged attacks and unrelated conversation. The DM forums overall used to look a lot like Tips n' Deals does today. It really isn't about profitability on either forum.. that said - much more time could be devoted to improving what is the main forum if it was the only forum. I like personally like the flow main forum.

initially there was more activity on that other side and it was, for the most part, 'friendly'. At this point, it's become more vindictive and personal rather than a true sharing of viewpoints and ideas. Bottom line is that it's not being used in to the original framework and the small group who continue to utilize it are continually offended and reporting each other.

Just dump the snitches, problem solved....
