Is your computer "midlevel" with 40 apps or more?

If so, I think you'll be glad to be upgrading your Mac rather than your Windows PC:

http://gcn.com/articles/2009/09/14/web-w...ily_170909

"The longest install involved a super user (650G of data, 40 apps installed) running midlevel hardware. That upgrade, for a 32-bit version, took 20 hours, 15 minutes."

(BTW, I love that "super user" terminology for those with 40 apps installed--I have hundreds of apps on my Mac. I guess there are no words in the English language to classify my usage level.)

Those estimates are very true.

I've been upgrading some Vista machines to Windows 7 Enterprise for a couple of weeks now...some it has taken 7 to 10 hours...others just a couple of hours.

Most of my machines are all on XP, so no direct upgrade there (and not planning on it for a long time), but the Vista machines, although it takes a long time, it is very worth it. Windows 7 - even just upgrading (sans clean install) has been turning some slow dogs into very fast workstations.

I will add that clean installs are normal in time...30 minutes or so.

I just checked and I have about 70 apps in my application folder. I hope I'm out of the computer business before I have to do a windows 7 install.

119 for me, but that doesnt count folders of apps, like iWork (pages, keynote, numbers) or office (word. e-rage, excel, PP) etc

i installed W7 beta on my bootcamp side (about 9 months ago?), ive only booted into it once to make sure it works...

If I just do a 'search'/filter in the Applications folder for type applications, I see 273, then. I am sure most people don't consider every little app that is part of a suite to be an app, though. Some are not very user-oriented/friendly.

Only 66 here, I must be a noob super user.

Artile,

Did a spotlight search for type "application" on my office imac and it found 589. 'course, this includes applications, classic applications, applescript "applications" and about ten "jar" files.

On my Mac mini I have 100 applications in the top level Applications folder, and a further 65 in my User/applications folder (not counting suites of apps in a single folder).

cheers
