Acoustic guitar strings
#1
Need to grab some strings for my son's acoustic guitar. It's an ovation if that matters. He is not available today for me to ask what kind he wants and I was hoping to pick them up during my lunch break. All I remember is light gauge.
Suggestions?

Elixir nanoweb strings are expensive but last longer.
Martin and D'Addario strings both have decent sound.

D'Addario strings

I think that is what I bought last time.

Thanks.

Is it an Ovation acoustic/electric? My first "real" guitar. Brings back memories.
Sorry, I can't anything of substance to the strings question, but I really liked that old guitar.

Yes. An acoustic/electric.
Round back. Cedar Top.
He normally plays an electric, but has started to play the acoustic again.

My favorite strings are Jim Pearse phosphor bronze. My Ovation Legend loved them. When I can't find those I get D'Addario phosphor bronze. Martin Marquis strings sound great for about an hour and then go dead. If you think he won't be changing strings for a while, go for the Elixir nanowebs.

Coming from electric guitar, his fingers will probably want light gauge strings. Personally, I prefer medium or medium-light gauge.

I always liked the D'Addario phosphor bronzes too. Given the sporadic nature of my playing I always stuck with light gauge since anything heavier would make a mess of my fingers (and HURT!) after even a short layoff.

D'Addario in my house too. Light makes sense if he's mostly an electric player.

D'Addario phosphor. John Pearse is better but cost more. Don't waste you money on those coated strings.

If you're in the mood to get him a treat, buy him a set of GHS Silk and Steel strings to try out (in addition to whatever strings you're getting for day-to-day use).

I just discovered them recently.

They have an incredible sound.
