Edit: I did contact my insurance company, alas, I only have liability and uninsured motorist (1987 car, not worth full coverage).

Man, that sucks. An FYI, Comprehensive it what covers theft, fire, vandalism, deer hits, etc. and it doesn't cost very much to add to your policy. I carry liability and Comp on my cars, seems to me to be the best match of cost vs what you can get out of it.

...most likely getting street sweeping tickets

That's how I got my stolen minivan back. When it got a ticket, they towed it to impound and I got a call. Ended up paying the parking ticket and impound fees (while they waiting to fingerprint it, I finally said forget it, don't print it and went to get it). I could have gotten out of the parking ticket, but it was too much hassle.

Maybe the cops will find the culprits and you can get $50k worth of mac equipment. I've never had a car stolen, but that's got to feel bad---like a violation.

Had my '66 bug stolen from the front of my apartment in the mid ninties. Three weeks later someone called and asked if I owned it. It had been parked in front of their house for three weeks. The full tank of gas was emptied and a month later the engine blew. It was in great, original condition. First thing I did was to scrub down the interior and get one of those steering wheel locks.

When I was a kid my mom picked up my dad at the bus station, put his bike and briefcase filled with gradebooks, final papers, and final exams (he was a university professor) for all 5 of his classes in the back of the van and went to the local mall to go Christmas shopping.

They bought all of our presents, took them out to the van, and then went back to get some French Onion soup at this great little hole in the wall place in the mall.

They came out, and the van was gone. Never saw any of it again. Dad had to guess at the grades (that was before computerized gradebooks). He said that was the only year he didn't fail anyone. He was a tough grader... no 'rocks for jocks' in HIS geology classes !

Christmas really, really, really sucked that year.
