DIY Glass Block?
#1
Anyone here ever worked with glass block for windows? I have two windows. One is a standard-sized basement window; a prefab off the shelf at home depot will likely work I think. The other is a good bit larger (3x4 feet or so, taller than wide) and I'm guessing will be need to be custom pre-built or built brick-by-brick on site.

Do it yourselfer project, or should I just call somebody?

I had mine done. The biggest issue was chiseling out the old window. That seemed to take a certain level of skill with a hammer and big honkin chisel, so i was glad I hired out. And it was cheap.. like $50 per window installation charge. You'll find people that specialize in that in your area.

What cbelt3 said. Hire out. Cheap labor and you have the job done right.

Last summer I filled in the lower half of a bathroom window with glass blocks. I had to build a frame because the 6 blocks were slightly smaller than the opening, but that was easy enough to do. As for the actual installation, I used LOTS of clear silicone to 'cement' them into place & ended up with a rock-solid panel. I hinged the upper part of the window so that it would open for ventilation.

I've been collection glass blocks for years so I had many to choose from.
