iPod Touch (2nd gen) OS question
#1
I have an iPod Touch 2nd generation, model MB531LL, Version 2.2.1 (5H11a). in fact this is my wife's iPod but she doesn't use it, so I use it now. Still, I have it synced with her computer for now. I have not made any software updates, yet, and when I looked at the App store (from my computer), I did not see any OS update available. I guess I have to hook up the iPod Touch and then maybe iTunes takes me to the OS 3.0 or so?

I would like to enable copy/paste, and maybe run some Apps that requires iPhone OS 3.0. I have no use for Bluetooth at this time.

So the question is: which OS should I install? 2.0 (is that when copy/paste was introduced?). 3.0? 3.x? what is the most stable OS for iPod Touch?

Thanks

OK, I think 3.1 is the latest

but is there any bug in 3.1, should I try to update to an earlier version 3.0?

Yes 3.1 is the latest and I have had no problems. Download and use have been fine. You down load it at the Apple store on line by clicking the iPod/iTunes link at the top of the page

I just put it on my 2nd gen Touch and it works fine. Cost $5. Only thing I've noticed so far, other than being able to get the latest apps, is the shake shuffle thing in the menu. Oh, and

SNAPPY!

We have both OS 3 and OS 2 2nd gen ipod touches.

I am not convinced OS3 is amazingly better - and it DOES break the ability to use readily available (i.e. not Apple-branded) video out cables in case you want to connect your touch to a tv or projector.

At the moment, we're keeping at least one OS2 for the time-being until there is a killer app that requires OS3.

Yes, you have to connect your iPod touch to your Mac, then in iTunes, allow it to update to 3.1 system for touch. The point sekker made about using non Apple video out cables is interesting... I have never connected mine to a TV, so not an issue for me.

I am. Lots of good stuff here:

I think a significant proportion of current apps require version 3 or later for full functionality.

BlueTooth, all four iPod Touches have SoundBlades for full, rich stereo sound

The ability to listen to podcasts at 2X speed and to go back 30 seconds at a time, were worth the price alone.
