need a credit card - and some advice
#11
Ditto for 2% Schwab Visa.

Nothing better than cash and having it deposited monthly without having to request checks, accumulate points, etc. I'd much rather have 2% hassle free cash than 3% off anything or have to deal with rebate checks every 2500 points (aka capital one). The 5% Apple card was the best though!

Their grace period seems the best allowing almost 2 full months of float on purchases on top of 2%. Not much when competitive liquid FDIC yields 1.6%, but an extra $5 or so a month in "float interest" buys me a couple fish tacos once a month.

Just get the Citi one. I've been a Citi cardholder for 16 years. They stick to their rules. One day late is late. They rarely refund late fees, etc if you call. Amex almost always does. Amex Customer Service is the best.

I opened a Citi card a year and a half ago with a balance transfer. They closed my first billing cycle two days after I opened the account and didn't send a statement to boot. It took me three hours and numerous phone calls - to someone in India - to get that mistake straightened out. It didn't help that, because I didn't find out about the problem until I received what should have been my first bill, a late fee was also involved. I've had a couple of other problems with them since then. I canceled that card last week - sayonara, Citi.

Capital One I avoid at ALL costs. I will never use a Capital One card again. Ever.

Bank of America, either. Not due to any issues with the card, but because they refuse to credit online payments until the next business day - if a payment due date falls on a weekend and payment isn't made by that Friday, guess what? Late fee! That's total bullshit and a blatant money grab. In my experience they are the only CC vendor with that policy. (Note: I believe the new credit card laws that went into effect this week outlaw this practice. BoA still won't get my business, however.)

Chase has been pretty good for me. AMEX has been fantastic.

When I pay off the Chase balance later this year I'll close that account - it'll be AMEX-only from that point on. They're a point or two higher than my other cards, but they are the only CC company to treat me like a customer and not a number when I call with a need.

Although that Schwab card sounds like a good deal...

Get a credit card through a solid, reputable credit union. Only way to go.

What does a credit card through a credit union offer that is special? Lower rates perhaps? I think people with rewards cards are ones that intend on paying off the balance each month. Rewards cards usually have higher rates; I think mine is like 23% or something.

i've had a Citi cc for almost twenty years. don't use it much but i've never missed a payment and have always paid in full. in the last two weeks they cut my limit almost in half and instituted a $60 a year fee (rebated if i spend $2400). i'm probably closing this account though it may mean my credit score taking it on the chin for a while.
