RIP: Depth of Field

Can a photographic-retard like myself politely request a laymans definition of "Depth of Field" in this context?
Preferably one using small words?
Thanks :-)

"Shallow depth of field" means that only part of the photograph is in focus. This is usually an intentional thing. The OP seems to be lamenting that shallow depth of field is dominating more and more photographic shooting these days.

By contrast, in Jamie's photo, all of the photo is in sharp focus.

Depends on the skill level but I see no shortage of enthusiasts throwing down $1800 for the Canon 85mm 1.2 and similar lenses. I think it is great that most people shoot deeper DOF than shallow, makes my images for l=clients look better in their perception.

Depth of field is the area in front of [and behind] the point of focus that is also in focus

You focus on a subject at 10' and depth of field extends from a point in front of the subject to a point behind the subject.

This area or zone changes with the f/stop and focal length of the lens.

I was about to say this discussion has bouts of shallowness.

OK.. Got it.
(now I can relate it to things like target rifle aperture sights and adjustable objective rifle scopes...)

Thanks :-)

yes, a pinhole sight aperture gives incredible depth of field.

Or you can use neutral density filters to control exposure so you can open the aperature. I was just discussing this topic with markintosh Jr last night.
