My son is ecstatic. His black MacBook has had recurring problems with freezing and difficulty with doing a system reinstall to fix it. AppleCare has replaced most of the innards on the machine, but the problems have reoccurred. Today the AppleStore near him offered to replace it with a current MacBook. When he said he really needs FireWire for his external drives they agreed to give him a (just previous version) 13" MacBook Pro.
The only sad part is that the black MacBook was a really nice looking machine. The unibody Macs aren't bad looking, but they are less distinctive. But he's still happy to get the upgrade.
I'm glad Apple is very profitable and can afford to really support their products when there are problems. I doubt they'd be so generous if funds were tight.

I've got a BMB and agree, it's a great looking machine.
Unfortunately for me, even with 4G RAM and a new 320G HD, it still feels a little pokey on startup. I've I have a few files on the desktop, they show up one by one. Even my PB12 is faster in that respect.
I'll try a faster HD, but I don't expect it to help.
A new MPB13 with a better graphics chip, might.

The graphics improvement, even to the nVidia 9400m, is one of the reasons he's really excited. He's using an external monitor (24" Dell I think) and will have to get a mini-DisplayPort adapter to replace his mini-DVI adapter.
He had upgraded to a faster drive, which he's going to pull as part of the exchange. Can't remember now but I think it's a 320 GB. He said it helped performance some, but I don't think it had a big impact.

It doesn't really have to do with whether Apple is making a lot of money or not. If your son goes around telling people how great Apple treated him, instead of what a POS his Macbook was, the gesture has paid for itself. Consider it a public relations expense.

Out of curiosity, how old was the problematic MacBook?
I keep wanting to go in and tell Apple my 2.16 GHz MBP (Core Duo) is burning my fingertips on the keyboard, but I don't think I would get much mercy there after 3 years...! LOL

I find the screen on the Black MB to be rather blah next to a MacBook Pro 15." Do the 13" MBP's have a better screen?

funny - I thought the black macbooks were downright ugly once the newness wore off. The blacks ones cost an extra $100 too - just for the color. Could never understand why people were willing to spend and extra $100 just so they could have the 'ugly' one.
Great luck for the kid - wow...
