FU - advice on tree pit guards / curbside planters

I found something that serves my purposes -

I was curious if anyone could recommend similar products. I'd probably need to buy about 20 of them so something just a bit cheaper would be nice as well.

If you define durable as standing up to destructive teen feet and mentality those might not work. If durable means standing up to growing season weather then those might work fine.
The plastic ones don't weigh enough and become sails in not too much wind.
That's probably the best you'll find for the price point you're at.

Looks nice, but even though it is wrought iron I would worry about how durable it is given the thickness of the metal in relation to the overall dimensions. Are people going to be stepping on this fence? It wouldn't be easy to bend, but I don't think it will stand up to much abuse. Of course anything more stout would surely cost more.

I don't expect them to be indestructible. If i wanted indestructible I'd need to pay hundreds of dollars.

I've come to realize that fences are expected in nyc. People need to be reminded not to trample through the pansies. I find it annoying because I'd rather leave my pansies unfenced.

Yeah, I would worry about durability too.

Assuming that the area is 4 feet square that would require 8 of those HD things and that is about 50 bucks. And 20 of them is a grand! If that much money is involved I would definitely shop around, big time!

Would the wooden sticks they put in to let plows know where the curb is in Winter work ?
Most places are pulling the few that haven't been run over and broken out so they can cut the grass.
I'd go grab some. They just throw them out. :-)

I'm unfamiliar with those but i'm fairly certain that i can get or make something like that here in nyc. i'm having trouble visualizing what you're talking about so posting a pic might be helpful.

I might get just a few of them and see how they survive before investing in a whole lot.

- they're just 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch x 4 foot oak sticks with one end pointed to bang into the ground and the other end painted a high visibility colour, usually orange or yellow.

Stores sell fancy plastic ones, some with reflectors, but the stores just put the cheap wooden ones.

These are fancy fiberglass ones- cost too much for kids to yank out and use as light sabres /swords :
same idea as the cheap wooden ones.


I put some plastic ones with reflectors on my driveway to help the newspaper deliverer back back out the driveway and she ran them over. (instead of getting hung up on the stone wall that's so hard to see)
I replaced them with rusty rebar.
For some reason she sees those.
Must look like they could do some damage. :-)

edit: sometimes Lowes and Home Depot sell them as tree stakes in the Summer - same sticks, just no paint on the tips.
