I've been watching for deals-- want something with good viewing angles, even backlighting, etc. =Must= be VESA ready. 27-28" . . . would say 30 except I know you can't touch any of those under a bazillion bucks or so.
Anyone purchase something along these lines recently they can recommend?
Thx for any info or leads, and to 'fil/RgG for anything they come across in their daily research.

I was looking, but decided on a different size. Dell makes a very nice 28" (old rez 1920x1200) with an IPS panel and it VESA ready. Sorry - don't know the exact model. This was the model I was gonna get until a 30" deal came my way.

Yeah, the $1,000 one . . . thinking I'm willing to go up to $5 or $600 for a killer deal on a superior monitor. Would snap up that Dell in a heartbeat if it were cheaper.

wow - it was about $600 when I was looking... keep you eyes out for deals when they roll by and there is a vibrant dell coupon market on ebay. You can often find 15-20% off coupons for $5 or so. Just make sure that it'll apply to you purchase.
If you want good viewing angle, you MUST get an IPS panel and they DO COST, but I think if you keep at it, you'll find one in our range. Stay in touch with the dell outlet. Deals come and go...

Get a refurbed Dell 30" off of eBay for under $900. That is what I did. Dell 3008WFP is a gorgeous monitor. Same panel as the Apple 30" with tons of more inputs; 2 DVI, hdmi, displayport, component, composite, svideo, and VGA. 2 flash memory readers and a 4 port USB hub. Get the cashback discount with free shipping and the monitor will run @ $800. No cables included with mine but the monitor looks brand new. Came with a 2 year warranty.

I settled, awhile back, for a Hanns•G, old rez, 28", 1920X1200, VESA mountable, that is great for solo desktop usage... available now for around $350, or less. Kinda sucky viewing angles for non-primary users, but awesome readability and clarity (your "even backlighting") as main user's monitor. When I originally got it in 2007, I thought it might be quickly passed down to Baby Buzz, as I was (and still am) holding out for the Dell or high end Samsung, but I gotta say, for an inexpensive, big monitor, it rocks. Full HD, though watching movies from the desk chair isn't the same as watching from the couch or bed, and it does have fewer connection options than its high priced counterparts. So, if you're not gonna share the view on a regular basis, it's a viable alternative... if you're regularly gonna entertain several people in front of it, it's not as wise of choice. I also have a higher end Samsung 20" next to the 28" that has better viewing angles, that I can swivel to show a small crowd, that has made it easier to delay the purchase of a more expensive 28". IIRC, there are a few others, like Viewsonic, that use the Hanns•G panel in same sized monitors, that have slightly different feature sets (inputs, speakers, stands, etc.).

Hal, you have to be thinking of the 2709, which is currently going for $750. I can find no evidence of it having an IPS panel.

Been aware of that one, have seen it at Microcenter ($339?) but =absolutely= have to have that viewing angle as it will not be a desktop monitor.

A little too rich for my blood, thanks. Also don't really need the extra size or energy expenditure.

I've been a long time fan of Planar's displays. I'm still happy with my two year old PX2611W (26", S-IPS panel, still goes for around $800).
Planar has a new model called the PX2710MW. It sells for a lot less than then PX2611W did, coming in at under $500 at some retailers. I expect that at that price it'll have a TN panel, but I haven't been able to confirm it yet.
