I remember from Public Speaking class that one should never start with, "Well..." and the worst is, "Well, I think..." which shows that the speaker (or debater) doesn't know their subject.
Mini-rant: use of the word "well" at the start of a sentence...

I can't stand the current (usually TECH nerd's) beginning of each "It's my turn to talk now....." by using the word SO.
SOooooooooo.....what we have done with Windows 7 is. SOooooooo... this thing here ...

The purpose of language is to exchange ideas, not to impress others with your pedantic mastery of the rules you learned in school. I pay less attention to the form than the content. Some really great ideas may be found in sentences that begin with "well", and I have found other speakers who have complete mastery of the mechanics of language to be totally boring and bereft of any original ideas.

I was in a restaurant once, and seated at the next table were two young women (probably mid 20's) who I determined were either grade school or high school teachers, based on the content of their conversation. I was appalled at their grammar. This is one sentence I heard: "Like, I was like, totally, like, freaked out, you know?". Their entire conversation went this way. It was sad.

Well, I don't have a problem with it - unless someone uses words like that in formal writing.
