Ubuntu for a newbie?
#11
I have the 10.04 netbook edition on my DM9. It has too often been a PITA. It is not even close to matching Mac OSX in versatility and ease of use. Too often I am faced with using terminal commands to fix things for which a GUI utility exists for MacOSX. Recently, on a trip, I let it do a system update after which it wouldn't restart. Not knowing Unix/Linux command line code I must ask for help on the several Linux/Ubuntu forums and trust that the answers I'm given are the correct answers.

I had no problem installing and running Ubuntu 8x and 10.x on my PC laptop. 9x was the PITA for me.

Which version of Ubuntu is good for my Mac Sawtooth G4? Yes, I would upgrade it to 10.4 but I have no disc so ...

So just download and burn the thing to disk. There used to be an option for a disk - even as a start-up disk - with v8, which was last time I looked at it.

You know there is a "netbook" edition now too, right?

Oh, I thought there would be a more Mac GUI like version.

I have Jolicloud running on our kitchen computer - an old atom box. When I had MacOS on there, it was nearly useless - no Youtube or Hulu - was choppy. With Ubuntu, everything works pretty well.

If the variety of experiences noted here is any indication, Ubuntu still sounds more like a hobby, not to take anything away from the successes of course.

They don't have 49000 employees for nuthin, ya know! That's partly where the GUI comes from!

any Mac that can run OS X should run OS X.

i tried several versions of Ubuntu & Kubuntu & Xubuntu on a Pismo, it was less than satisfying.

plus there's no PPC support for Flash, if that matters to you.

PPC is done. There are versions of Linux that will run on PPC, but they are not well supported. PPC was always a niche product. Linux on PPC is a niche within a niche.
