I've also moved away from this forum a few years ago to another forum that was more Mac-centric because I felt that too much time was spent "chatting".

Did that other forum go belly up?
Actually, two forums, ehMac has grown enough that it's now able to support its founder as a full-time job.
RedFlagDeals and its parent company was bought out by Yellow Pages about a year and a half ago.

At some point, topics that you may want to follow such as, just an example, which brand of paired memory sticks work best in which model, disappear all too quickly because they are subsumed by "what's your dinner?" threads.

  1. you can always follow a thread if you want
  2. you can also use the search feature when you want to find threads or posts on a specific topic
  3. threads do not "disappear," they move off the front page. if they move off too quickly for you (which they don't) see 1 and 2 above

I can't tell you how long it has been since I had an omelet ... but this morning I took the time to
saute some onions, garlic, 1 whole diced tomato, 2 eggs, freshly chopped smoked ham, some
Jack cheese and a quarter of 1 very hot Thai chili pepper.. it was delicious and now I am posting

Have you seen how many people actually "follow" a thread once it disappears off of the front page? I know that I don't bother looking on the third let alone second page.

I do find it ironic this is named the "Tips and Deals" board. And to IronMac's point, some of the knowledgable Mac people who didn't get involved in the chit-chat never came here or left because of the chit-chat.

I'm okay with things as they are. I'm okay with people complaining about how things are. I'm okay with people praising how things are.

I love you all unconditionally, and think you're super swell!

Isn't this a bit like complaining that you have to watch shows on tv you don't like so that you can get through to the good stuff?

I certainly don't click on all the detritus, but I follow all sorts of things on here. I love being shown new software that someone likes, or a pertinent video.Sometimes I even have mac related questions that are almost always solved quickly and courteously.

You pays your money...

I don't mind the thread pollution - but I mind the pollution of the content in the threads.

Someone posts a real question and some smart ass replies (sometimes admittedly funny) with an OT answer and kills the thread or veers it off track.

Not much to do about it though - that is the way this place works.

There aren't as many great deals on things as there once were, and, when there are, the deal-centric sites like Obese Wallet or Bargain Ben give them most of the exposure they need; I'm not sure what's left to discuss. I rather like the diverse, stream-of-consciousness discussions that are held here, and I would prefer the forum lords not try to divide discussions into inane categories.

People actually watch bad stuff in order to get to the good stuff? I guess Darwinism doesn't work...you'd think idiots like that would be killed off the first few times they tried crossing the street.
