The Giants recently lost their star catcher Buster Posey for the rest of the season in a play like that.

"Who says baseball isn't a contact sport?"
hockey players, football players, rugby players, etc...
contact once or twice a year does not make a contact sport...

The plate is the gold. The catcher can always move outta the way.

Base runners also like to mow down second basemen when they're trying to prevent a double play.

I saw Martin block the plate on the ESPN highlights last night... ouch!
Martin was one of Baby Buzz's favorite players when he was w/ our home town Dodgers, then Posey got steamrolled earlier this year, so the the kid is in favorite catcher limbo for the time being... Mauer's been out, the little Molina is OK, McCann is alright but doesn't have much personality, Martinez needs to be traded to the NL and catch every day to see what he's really made of to go along w/ 1B and DH.

The lack of protective equipment makes those occasional contacts dangerous.
It always cracks me up to see football players get into pushing matches and the occasional thrown punch.
Personally, there are not enough arrests made for assault in some sports.
