Need Recommendation for Adapter to Hook 8MM Camera to Mac for iMovie Import
#1
Sorry if this has been asked in the recent past; can someone recommend an adapter to hook up an older 8MM Sony Camcorder to import some movies into iMovie? (There are no pass-throughs or anything on the camcorder).

Thanks. Need to order something today.

ElGato makes one that we sell. Coworker just used it to get tons of old movies converted recently and liked it.

I'd go for the built-in TV tuner for the extra $30, if you were going to go for the video capture portion, though I'm sure I'm missing something in the finer details between the two...

:agree:

That way, you'll have yourself a Mac DVR setup afterwards.
Note - the specs say Core Processor as a minimum, but I have hazy memories of people being much happier with at least a C2D processor when importing analog video.c,

If memory serves, the elgato boxes only "record" (import) into EyeTV. And then you have to export into some other thing or do something else to get it into iMovie. Granted, once it's in EyeTV that will provide its own editor, which is very easy to use.

But for going straight into iMovie, it's been suggested to use a digital camcorder as the intermediary A/D stage, such as miniDV. iMovie sees the FireWire-connected miniDV camcorder, which passes the analog 8mm camcorder's signal (assuming the miniDV camcorder has a passthrough function; not all do.)

is there a more recent version of this product? just wondering, but like having analog in and dvr.

remember if you can borrow an old canon or similar dv cam with passthough, you save a 100 bucks. I just did this with an old sony hi8 and a zr40 using QT to capture.
