Steve RIP
Thanks for making computing more colorful.

I remember playing "The Art of War" my friend's Mac in his basement in 1986. It was my first introduction to a mouse. Shortly after that, I took my first computer class in high school using an Apple IIc.

In 1988 I bought my first Mac for college: a SE. In a year or two, I sent my first e-mail and listened to my first sound file on a NeXT in my school's computer lab (I also viewed my first piece of internet PRoN via a Mac IIci, but that's a tale for a different day).

In the 1990s when everyone thought that Windows was the next best thing and Michael Dell recommended liquidating Apple and selling it back to shareholders, I was a lonely Mac holdout (although OS 8.x was giving me fits).

I bought my first iPod in 2003 and it is still going strong to this day.

In retrospect, a large majority of my digital gadgets were directly inspired by Steve Jobs. He will be missed. I haven't been this sad since Joe Strummer died :-(

very true (although I'll admit to being much, much more surprised at Strummer's death, and that made it harder to take)

Here's a link to an earlier "First Mac OS" thread.

In 1995, I was terrified to get a computer because I knew it would change my life.

Luckily, I was compelled beyond the fear.
Luckily, we chose Mac.

And we never looked back.

Thank you, Steve.

In life he changed the world many times - always for the better.

In death, he has changed the world one last time, and this time it is for the worse.

RIP crazy one.

this one's hitting me almost as hard as Jim Henson.

I went through art school in 1988 and learned everything by hand. Technical pens, rulers, ellipses, french curves, t-squares, illustration board, etc.

All tools. Very direct connection to me. Comfortable where they felt like a part of me.

First time I sat in front of a Mac, it felt the same way. It felt like I was still a very key part of the creative process. It didn't isolate me in any way. It encouraged me to do more.

The Mac has never been "just a tool" to me. It always seemed to be more and I always pushed myself to do more with it. To chase the dream.

I give credit to Steve and Apple for that. They seemed to be doing more and expecting more from themselves to make the experience of using the Mac, iPod, iPhone, iPad the best it could be.

They made me believe in the dream.

There is a big difference to me though. Jim Henson died very suddenly and unexpectedly. Steve had a ticking clock perched on his shoulder for 5+ years. Doesn't make it any easier though. I think that Steve Jobs and Jim Henson were cut from the same cloth. They both demanded and delivered excellence, and inspired and coaxed excellence out of those around them.
