Safe to drink the water?
#1
Hi,

We're planning a Cancun trip and will be staying at one of the nice all-inclusive resorts (Moon Palace).

I'm just curious...is it safe to drink the water at these resorts? I would imagine since they cater to tourists, they must use filtered and/or bottled water throughout the resort's multiple restaurants, bars, etc.

Thanks.

Never. Ever. Ever. Pack along a steri-pen and/or filter. Plus a box of Immodium just in case. And hey.. you're on vacation. Nothing bacterial can live in that good Tequila !

Mescal will do in a pinch.

the water that's drinkable will be clearly marked - even restaurants will post 'ice made from filtered water' or some such.

the big problem is that things like washing the lettuce has to be done the same way.

at an all-inclusive, I wouldn't worry about it

Also, when brushing your teeth, rinse with a bottle of water, not tap water from the sink. Don't even let your brush touch the tap water. Same in the shower - don't swish water around in your mouth.

We went to the Dominican Republic in '05 I think, and these two things were what I missed. Needless to say, there was plenty of throwing up a few days after that...

Once you get sick from the germs down there, are you then immune for a time? Or can a subsequent ill-judged sip from a dirty glass make you sick again? Do the natives get sick from the water, or is it just those who haven't been exposed for a lifetime?

And you always hear about this in Mexico - "don't drink the water" but I assume this also applies to central and South America, swaths of Africia, Indonesia, Indian subcontinent... Thailand? Russia? I assume, radioactivity notwithstanding you can drink the water in Japan, and China I've presumed you need mostly worry about pollutants more than infectious diseases?

I'm curious. It's something that's kept me travelling in the "civilized" world.

Yes, in resorts it's OK to drink the water, but you'll probably be served bottled water at meals. As far as brushing teeth, I would say you are OK to do that. You can always ask around when you get there. They would not be in business long if all of their foreign clients were busy retching in the bathrooms instead of drinking $10 pina coladas.

Bottled water only, when in Mex.
