ARG!!! hurricane sandy, nyc apt hunting, and flaky contractors
#1
I signed a lease that started on October 15th. Tomorrow is November 15th and I'm not much closer to having the apt.

---

Until recently, I had lived in the same apt for nearly 10 years with a rotating cast of roommates. Not most people's idea of being an adult but this is nyc - it was cheap, i was confortable and moving sucks.

Eventually I had to grow up. It helps when a funny, smart and beautiful redhead is encouraging the process. She moved into my place until we could find something. We looked rather passively for quite a while, rarely making any progress and usually giving me a stomach ache. then an apt next door became available from the same landlord. perfect.

renovations. great! we're going to have a new apt! Work starts on the 1st and we move in on the 15th. What? not done on time? Thats fine. We'll make it Nov 1st.

And everyone knows what happened right around the 1st. The landlord is hard to get in touch with which is frustrating but we had no idea what she was dealing with. A few days pass. Luckily we could simply stay put during that time but we needed to know when the apt would be ready. Eventually I get stories but nothing on a deadline. The storm nearly reached her home and took out the power / someone has pneumonia / father is sick / is pumping out basements. Lots of talk, no deadline.

Yesterday I saw the landlord in front of the building. She was waiting for the contractor. I get breakfast and wait for the landlord to call. It doesn't come. I go back to the building and she's gone. I speak to a worker who's carrying tile upstairs who assures me that he'll get me when the contractor is back, he just stepped out. I go into my old apt (where all my stuff is) and 20 minutes later his truck is gone.

As best I can tell almost nothing happened between Oct 15th and Nov 1st. Work was done yesterday but apparently nothing today. I really don't understand how this industry works. And my landlord is apparently completely unable to obtain and pass on the information I require. And since this is nyc finding a new apt would be a hell of a lot of work.

So I find myself using airbnb.com to rent a week at a time.

Sorry about your situation. I have two beautiful units for you if you want to see what life in Chicago is like. They should be ready December 1 ;-)
Seriously, dealing with contractors sucks 95% of the time and I feel your landlord's pain-- I have no doubt they're as frustrated by the situation as you are, although I don't quite understand the poor communication.

Moving sucks.
Dealing with contractors sucks.
Dealing with people who don't give updates suck.

Having a beautiful intelligent girlfriend to move into the new apartment with, eventually, will hopefully make all the suckage worth while. Big Grin

We're thinking about suing our contractor, if that's any consolation.

Apropos of nothing at all, whatever happened with the chair-pissing cat?

WOW, I could go on a little further down that road, but sometimes decorum just wins out , , , :jest:

Starting from Scratch: How to Correct Behavior Problems in Your Adult Cat

its a seriously useful book and i've lived with cats all my life so i thought i knew some things.

I'm guessing that on top of your landlord's personal problems, the contractor is having problems with absent employees, time-management, supplies and transportation at the moment and your unoccupied apartment is a lower priority than the ones a short distance away with no walls and soggy cabinets.

Our guy has gotten bad again, after we thought we'd sorted it out: I am so buying this book. Thanks!

OH and I hope everything works out okay with the apt!
