I know selecting a desk chair involves a lot of personal preference. I'm not that picky and every chair I've had seems to function fine until either 1) the seat padding wears out, 2) the fabric tears or 3) the hydraulics go out. In other words, the cheap sub $50 chairs haven't given me any ergonomic issues but I don't like having to replace them every 3 or 4 years.
I've always like Aeron chairs, but never thought they were worth the $700 new. I'm starting to see used ones for around $250. Are they worth it? They have 12-year warranties but I would want it to last longer if I'm spending that much on it. How about the Aeron or Mirra knock-offs. Are any of them any good?
Please share your wisdom about chairs. TIA.

I would sit in them before you buy.
They are great, but for some people, they are uncomfortable.

its all personal preference. i've gone standing desk (which is just as expensive, unfortunately) but it means i'm not picky about chairs since i rarely sit (10% of the time?)

Bought my Aeron about 12 years ago and it is still in service with no discernable difference from when new! It has outlasted a long line of computers and my back has been eternally grateful given the long hours I have sat in it over the past years. I would pay $700 all over again if needed, $250 is a no brainer provided the seller warrants condition is excellent with no broken levers or cuts or tears in fabric. Based on my experience I don't really thing they wear out except for abuse.

I've had mine for probably 10 years and it's absolutely like new.

I bought an Aeron in 2004 and it's been worth every penny. I can't detect any change in it's operation and the seat material has held up perfectly. If you can find a used one, it's probably a safe buy if you can check it out first. But if you can afford a new one, don't think you are over spending!
Keep in mind that Aerons come in different sizes.

I am a bigger guy and used to shred cheap chairs. I would get a year or two out of them. I have a size c aeron that I have had for at least 12 years. It has been nearly flawless, comfortable and looks brand new today. I got more than I paid for!!!
My only gripe is the adjustable arm rests flop down all the time. I wrapped a couple of rubber bands around the lever and it is perfect.
I recommend without hesitation!!!!
I have learned that office chairs and car tires are worth spending more money on than you normally would. When cared for they will both last you a long time and if you cheap out - you will be reminded of your poor decision for a LONG time!

About the only wear point on the Aeron is the back lumbar support, but they are easily replaceable. Mine tore and so have a number of them here at OWC, we love our Aeron chairs
