I have an old WD Hard Drive that will not mount no matter what I do. I've changed the cables, tried it with different computers, done all I can think of.
It lights up and I can feel it spinning, but it just won't be recognized, and I can't figure out how to open the darned case.
Assuming I could get it out of the case, could I put it in another case and, hopefully it would mount?
HELP

Is it a 2.5" portable drive? If so, the answer is maybe. Some of WD's portables have a direct USB connection to the drive inside, so taking it out of the case won't do you any good. If it is a SATA model inside, then it might work in a different case. 3.5" drive might also work in a different case (unless you're using WD's encryption software).
Also, a lot of portable drives are glued together now, which is why it isn't obvious how to open it. You often ruin the cosmetics of the case getting it open.

3.5 USB3, not using their software. I done care if I ruin the case, I'd just like to get the info off the drive.

Have you used any disk repair utilities to see if they can find the drive?

So these will only work with bare drives, correct? I wish I could get this bugger out o f the case!

The HD interface I use is even more barebones, you could probably saw off the end of the case and hook into the connectors.

I'm assuming you've tried connecting to a PC - just in case it is something going on with the mac interface. Very unlikely but just in case..
