I recently bought a Sony Class 10 card in micro format; it does not seem to playback at a consistent pace on my DSLR (but does seem to record the video fine).
What would you recommend for a decently priced fast card, and would a normal size format make a difference?

Need a bit more information.
Which DSLR?
Are you trying to playback video that you took on the DSLR? Does the video file play back normally on a computer?
What are the DSLR video settings? (resolution, frame rate, compression)
It's strange to me that it would record the video fine but not be able to play it back properly. Read speed should be much faster than write speed. A Class 10 card writes at a minimum of 10MB/s which should be plenty fast. A "normal sized" SD card should not make a difference. Any Class 10 card should be fast enough for the read/write you're performing.

FWIW, I generally buy Sandisk for all my flash memory needs, and I buy the fastest card my camera(s) can handle. That means 90MB/s for Compact Flash and 45MB/s for SD.
Just be careful buying SD cards from smaller vendors, SD cards are easily counterfeited. Never go to ebay for flash memory.

Not all class 10 cards are equal. What is the model # on the card and what camera are you using?

the camera is a hacked GH1. the card is just a Sony Class 10 micro card, nothing special. card has 40mb/s
just shot some video and noticed the setting was not at its highest. switching to the highest setting and now the card chokes recording as well.
