Touro drive enclosures... anyone have one?
#1
I ordered two of the Touro USB3 drive enclosures from the last OWC garage sale, and they came today. Not a bad deal for $1.75. I know I have to reformat any drive I put in there, and they can't be used elsewhere without being reformatted.

Does anyone have any experience with these? They are fanless, which concerns me a little. I've never used Time Machine, and was thinking of putting an old 2TB drive I have lying around in one and using it for that. Will the fact that it's fanless cause a problem if I leave it on all the time?

I got one retail that came with a 4 TB drive. It should be fine as long as you are not putting in an older higher performance/heat drive.

I've got one with a 750gb drive in it? Seems to be working fine.

I put a WD "Green" drive into it. I'm hoping that's ok.

Just the Touro portables, but so far, so good. Based on the little ones, I wouldn't hesitate to try the desktops if/when the need arises.

I got two, like 6 months ago. Personally, I think they are garbage, even for the cheap price. OWC provides all the disclaimers and I still bought two of them. 3 different drives I formatted in the enclosures and could not get the drives to mount on the desktop. This is not a concern with OWC (for me).

If they are working for you, then that is great. Fortunately for me, they were cheap enough not to be sad when I put them in the recycle bin.

YMMV.

I was able to move a drive formatted in one of the touro 3.5 inch cases into an external Seagate case from OWC.

Seems to work fine.

I had low expectations; assume low end, and you will be fine.

No problems here. I only have a 200GB 5400 drive installed.

I have two from OWC that I have yet to put to use. It seems that these days, bare drives are no less expensive than ones that already come with an external case. Maybe I'll list my two for the next Free Item Monday.
