Yeah, but it matters. A used bookstore, pre-owned textbooks, a lending library, the list goes on.

It's not a small thing.

The difference is that the book can't be duplicated and in two places at once. The electronic version can be duplicated.

If you wanted to treat downloaded media truely like physical media you would have to delete the original as you made the copy to loan out. The problem is, there is no way to do that.

Hi Space,

I'm guessing this is in response to my inquiry about getting an Australian version of an ibook that hasn't been released in the US. I have no issue paying for both a hardcopy and digital copy of a book. If nothing else, it ensures the author is compensated appropriately.

In the case of my inquiry, it was because I don't know when or even if the book I wanted will be published in the US either in hardcopy or digitally. It's hung up at the publisher right now. I can get a hardcopy from Amazon.co.uk easily enough. But, I'd rather have a digital copy I can throw on my ipad and the only ones I can get right now are illegitimate copies.

The author in question is by far my favorite author and the book is part of a storyline that has spanned 30+ years. It's very important to me to support his efforts. Downloading an illegitimate copy is unacceptable to me. I'll buy the UK version of the book and download the ebook when it arrives in the US. Eventually.

Tom Ashbrook on OnPoint Radio did a show on this just the other day. Search for it, it should be available at onpointradio.org

That, and also, the electronic publisher might have paid some sort of cost to electronically publish, so you are taking a piece of that organization's pie.

I'd buy the electronic version (Kindle) if it's available.

I have already re-bought several dozen books I already had on paper from the Kindle store (more convenient to have an entire series on one device).

Home-made pirated PDF ebooks have too many weird formatting errors, though often you're stuck with them for out-of-print books.
