How do I get a mac to recognize a new hard drive as an old one?

I have a 500 GB hard drive with a hosed directory.
I want to start using a larger one (1TB) in its place (will reformat the 500 and use it for something else...) I don't think it's hosed enough that I'll lose any of the data (it still works but some functions cause the Finder to lock up.)
My impression is that I can give it the same name but some sort of device ID will cause the OS to treat it as a new drive (I have a number of automatic processes, e.g. Security Spy saves set to use this drive and I don't want to have to fuss with them.)
Am I right that just giving it the same name is not enough? If I am, is there a way to trick the OS into recognizing it as the old drive?

So... kind of moot at this point, since I realized the other drive is also a 500 (no advantage to switching to it, unless it turns out Drive A can't be reformatted) but would still be interested to know how this works.

anyone know for sure if the UUID is different on separate drives?
