[eyeballs] Thinking of going back to contact lenses ... but there's been a middle-age change since then.

I've been near-sighted since 8th Grade but could read while wearing glasses. It's long been a habit to remove them however when doing so. But now I can't use the iPhone or read anything close wearing them. I have to remove or look over them to read anything close. My distance vision has barely changed in decades but the near vision is "closing in" and I'm now a candidate for progressives.

How does that jibe with wearing contacts?

I had multifocal contacts.

I stopped wearing contacts when my eye doctor retired and I couldn't get any of the corporate operation whores to prescribe non-100% astigmatism corrected contacts like my eye doctor did.

I use a multi in my right and distance in my left. B&L use to make some that were incredible, but they have dropped my diopter (blind).

My opt gave me a few to try. I ended up with Ciba AirOptix.
The B&Ls were suppose to be 2 weeks I think. I got a month easy, except in the worst of NYC summers.

The AirOptix are suppose to be a month, but they are barely. However they do let more oxygen in which is important when I'm wearing for 12-16 hours in climate controlled space.

I use my progressives every waking moment I can, except when I'm in public. Having worn contacts for the greater portion of my adult life, I find glasses a little disconcerting for some reason.

Heaters and A/C can both dry the air. Is that what you mean? I guess I don't understand.

Again, I'm confused. Do you not go outside or in the car much, or don't stay awake long? Smile

As for me, when I wore them eons ago I only had the regular B&L Softlens daily kind. My main objection to them was sensitivity to air movement/dry eyes since they didn't let as much water through or something like that. If I was riding in the back of a car, the car's dash vents couldn't be aimed back at me for example. And wearing them late into the night was uncomfortable for the same reason - dry.

I don't get the "in public" either.
Course I used to be able to keep my contacts in for days only cleaning them well when they started to feel 4 times thicker than they used to. :-)

I'm in a similar situation. Used to be able to read this iPhone screen with my contacts in.

But now I can only do so during the day.

I can read without my contacts, however.

Wondering what options besides ditching the contacts and going glasses.

i am nearsighted and farsighted in both eyes; i couldn't adjust to bifocal contacts. i wear a contact in my right eye to correct for nearsidedness and nothing in my left eye. i can read close things pretty well uncorrected through my left eye and better with a pair of cheapo readers, again using only my left eye; i can read almost nothing close through my right contact.

i recently got a pair of glasses to correct for nearsidedness in my left eye and which is blank (no correction) in the right lens. this significantly sharpens night driving, movie watching and seeing anything else at more than ten feet or so.

hope this is helpful.

yes

I go outside, but I don't drive with glasses. The peripheral is no where near as good as the contacts.
And they fog in bars.
I've been know to stay awake for 15 minutes or more.

Mrs. Cbelt3 uses progressive contacts. She likes 'em. Baush & Lomb models.
My eyelids refuse to let anything close to my eyeballs. Suckers slam shut like a safe door. No contacts for me !
