This is so close. I'd do all of the above before rolling your own. The local Genii have a *lot* of leeway, and I think it's worth a shot to approach them, tell the sword, and subtly admit you're at their mercy.

There is the flat rate repair, too, isn't there? That *is* pricey, $310 last somebody mentioned. I think that's too much if it's just the SSD.

System Profiler/Report should be able to disclose the SSD manufacture.

Interesting.

A departure from the HDD reports where I would see Hitachi or Toshiba.

That must be rebadging on Apple's part. I hadn't seen anything about Apple acquiring any company that manufactured SSDs.

I will be contrarian, I don't think Apple will let you buy AppleCare or fix it under warranty. They've become sticklers lately. I hope I am wrong.

Don't mean to be a jerk, but I once asked a rep about this and I was told that 3 DAYS beyond expiration was doable.

Possibly. They can backdate the repair a few days, not sure what the window is. After that you are at the mercy of customer relations.

Here we go... the SSD in the MBA is a Toshiba THNS series, using a Sandforce 2281 controller:

This would explain why those with failed drives are first told by Apple to try a firmware update.

Here's the update:

Did a lot of scrambling to get a bootable 10.8 disk to start up the MBA and install and update Disk Warrior.

It turned out that the only backup I had was the original Time Machine backup done the day of purchase. With DW, the directory was rebuilt enough to mount a preview image of the SSD. That allowed me to copy the last years worth of Documents and Downloads that are not on the cloud. It could not locate the Mail folder needed to back up email...so that last year is likely gone but not mission critical.

^ This makes me remember that I searched for some emails yesterday and several seemed to have vanished.

The installed SSD is the Toshiba 128. My friend that is an Apple employee is confident that they will bend on the date for this one. Appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow....
