Car Key with Remote Replacement Suggestions
#1
My Toyota has the key and Remote for opening the doors all in one.

Has anyone ever gotten a replacement at a reasonable price? I noticed that Autozone had a display for the remotes, didn't notice a key attached.

Or is the Combo Key and Remote only a dealer item?

Believe it or not, some Ace Hardware stores do this. Call around until you get one who does. Some people have said their keys only work to open the door, but when I asked a couple of stores, they both said they also turned on the car. Luckily, I found my lost key.

Dealer. If this is an electronic ignition key then this is one item you want to have your dealer take care of. I paid $200 for a key for my VW at my dealer and it works flawlessly.

You will have to go to the dealer if you want it done right. The keys at Ace are cloned keys. They take the chip in your current key and clone the information to a new key. This in theory will work, but the car still thinks it only has one key programmed to it. If it were to ever lose that programming for that key or it became corrupt neither key would work. The cloned keys also aren't as reliable over time as the originals.

Home Depot worked fine for my Mom's car - about $35.

I just ordered 2 keys and 2 remotes for our '06 G6 and 1 key and 2 remotes for our '98 Grand Prix off of Amazon. The remotes were $25 a piece and the keys around $15. WAY WAY cheaper than going to a dealer. From a dealer the remotes would have been $80-100 apiece and the keys around $60. The G6 remotes required programing by the dealer, but the remotes for the Grand Prix could be programed by me as well as all the keys.

What did that cost?

I looked at it and my dealer wanted as much to program as a new key would cost.

I don't think this has a chip to recognize the key etc,

Just 3 black buttons, and one red, and a small hole with a red light that lights up when pushed.

When I lost a Ford key, the Ford place told me I had to bring the truck in. I kept asking them how in the hell am I supposed to do that without a key.

The GMC/Buick/Pontiac dealer wanted $50 per remote for programming so I stop by the Chevy dealer and they did both for $15.
